Today’s Colombian Spanish word I want to share with you is “chancleta.” Chancleta means “flip-flop” or “sandal” and is a very common word in Colombia, especially on the coast where chancletas are used every day. Very similar to chancleta is the word “chancla,” which is a shorter word that means the same thing.
Even so, while these two words are VERY Colombian, you may hear them in other Spanish-speaking countries– maybe chancla more than chancleta. In fact, there has even been a YouTube video made about the “Legend of the Chancla,” as many Hispanic moms are famous for using these shoes to mantain order with their children!
